CO2CRC – Environmental Monitoring Program
CO2CRC is Australia’s world-leading research organisation in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), operating at the OITC facility since 2004 with carbon dioxide storage validation into depleted gas field and saline geological formations.
Out-Task Environmental was commissioned to undertake to undertake environmental monitoring services for Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) pilot project licence compliance purposes over a 4-year contract period (2025 to 2028). The scope includes annual soil gas and groundwater monitoring with associated reporting to assess the potential risks from carbon dioxide injection operations to near surface soil and groundwater environmental values.
To date, interpretation of the 2025 monitoring results indicate that CO2CRC’s storage programs at the OITC have had no measurable impact on the surface environment or condition and, as such, the site complies with all regulatory requirements.
The results of our work is summarised on pages 53 to 54 in the 2024-2025 CO2CRC annual report.
